Katana - Mumei(No Signature) - NBTHK Certificate(Nakajima Rai) - Shirasaya(Sayagaki by Kunzan) Koshirae - Suriage Nakago - Koto Era

This sword was made by Rai Kuninaga. Rai Kuninaga was a disciple of Rai Kunitoshi, who later moved to Nakajima in Settsu Province and began making swords, hence Rai Kuninaga is also known as Nakajima Rai.

This sword was made in the Nanbokucho period and O-suriage was applied to the blade to give it its current length. The blade is wide, and the koitame hada has a fine nie. The tip is also larger, and the hamon is based on a suguha, with active ko-gunome and ko-choji. The sword blade has no flaws or dents, and the surface is very clean. The characteristics of the Rai school are well represented and are of excellent workmanship.

The saya also has an appraisal sayagaki by Honma Kunzan, a Japanese sword researcher and founder, director, and president of the Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords. Kunzan certified the sword as the authentic work of Nakajima Rai in March 1987.

The Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords has also recognized this sword as an important sword, and a certificate of authenticity accompanies the sword. We highly recommend this masterpiece as a family heirloom.
