This katana is a wonderful ubu piece, engraved with Sukesada's name and certified as authentic by the Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords.

The sword is in extremely good condition with few flaws, but there is a thin forging flaw on the sashi-ura side of the kissaki. The jigane is a well-kneaded hada with mokume mixed in with itame, and the utsuri characteristic of bizen katana can also be seen. Hamon is a suguha like yamato and yamashiro, with nioideki chojiashi.

On the nakago, “Bishu Osafune Sukesada Eis engraved on the omote side and “Genki Yonen Hachigatsu-bi Eon the ura side. Sukesada is a famous swordsmith representing Sue-Bizen along with Tadamitsu and Katsumitsu, and according to one theory, there were about 60 swordsmiths who made swords with the Sukesada name. Among them, Sukesada, whose real name was Yosozaemon, is said to have had the most outstanding skills and is considered the finest of all katanas of the Koto period.

Also rare is the engraving of the Muromachi period Genki year, which makes this piece even more valuable. In May 2024, the Society for Preservation of Japanese Art Swords recognized this katana as a genuine work of Sukesada, and furthermore, issued a hozon certificate of authenticity for it as a very valuable piece that should be preserved for future generations.

The koshirae is equipped with both Tensho style uchigatana with Kaerizuno and a shirasaya for storage (the shirasaya will be equipped upon delivery). The tsuka is wrapped in dark brown suede leather in the style of tsumami-maki. The dark red glossy lacquered scabbard is very elegant yet presentable. This set is a genuine Sukesada katana with a certificate of authenticity, a very rare find that is also engraved with the Genki year, and is well worth adding to your collection.
